Old mine tunnels and fantastic views
Gravel bike tour from Feld am See / Carinthia / Austria
Old mine tunnels and fantastic views
Follow in the footsteps of magnesite mining in the Nockberge mountains and raise the curtain for the most beautiful view of Lake Millstättersee. An Alpine gravel tour, not easy, but simply beautiful!
From Feld am See, the route leads to the Nock town of Radenthein and then uphill towards Kaning. After the first climb, we turn left into Bergmannstraße, which leads us into a secluded valley with abandoned magnesite mining tunnels. The tarmac road climbs steadily at 10 - 14 % and then turns into fine gravel. The junction after 16 km at 1670 m above sea level in the direction of Riegelalm / Millstätterhütte is important. The path now becomes rougher and there may be the odd pushing section before we reach Millstätter Thörl. The view over the deepest lake in Carinthia is unique at this point and a great cinema experience. After a break at the rustic Millstätterhütte, we head downhill towards Obermillstatt and along the high plateau to Sappl. The steep descent to the lake offers another wonderful view of the lake before returning to Feld am See on the main road or cycle path. There you can take a dip in the lake and enjoy a cool drink on the jetty or under the lime trees on the church square.
